Speakers’ Corner is a unique space where anyone can freely express their views on any topic. It highlights the city’s democratic character and reinforces the principle that every individual’s voice matters. Located in the north-eastern corner of Hyde Park near Marble Arch, the site gained official prominence in 1872 when an Act of Parliament set aside this section of the park for public speaking. Few people know that for a long time, public executions took place near what is now Speakers’ Corner. This refers to the Tyburn Gallows, first erected in 1196. Surprisingly, this grim chapter also connects to freedom of expression, as condemned individuals were granted the opportunity to deliver a final speech before execution. Naturally, the context was vastly different. The gallows were dismantled in 1783, with executions moving to Newgate Prison, but the site’s symbolic connection to public speaking took root centuries ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first major events at the location unfolded in 1855. Mass public unrest erupted in the park\u2014before a dedicated zone had even been designated\u2014over the Sunday Trading Bill. The bill sought to prohibit buying and selling on Sundays, even though Sunday was the only day off for most working-class Londoners. Leading up to the park’s official recognition, numerous other protests and rallies took place here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the early 1900s, as part of the campaign for women’s right to vote, suffragettes held both small rallies and massive demonstrations in Hyde Park, often gathering near the Reformers’ Tree.
