For instance, in the second half of the 19th century, the attention of scientists across the globe was focused on the invention of pyroxylin, a discovery made by the chemist Frederick Abel. In fact, many unique inventions and famous scientists are associated with London. However, few people notice the origins of everyday objects. It may be news to many that the world’s first jigsaw puzzle originated right here in the UK capital. What did this initial puzzle look like, and who gave us the chance to wrack our brains during the assembly process? Read more at ilondon.

The London Connection and Subsequent History

The history of the jigsaw puzzle’s invention and subsequent development began in the 18th century. The British public first learned of its existence in the 1760s. The puzzles were created by British cartographer and engraver John Spilsbury, who became world-famous for this invention. This took place in London. The most interesting aspect is the purpose for which this unique puzzle was originally made: it was used for education. The first puzzles remained a teaching tool for mastering geography for a long period, consisting of geographical maps cut into small pieces. The idea was hugely successful, and the invention proved extremely beneficial. Using the puzzle allowed students to cement educational material in a game format.

A little later, John Spilsbury realised the commercial success of his invention and began manufacturing maps for sale. The designs were not limited to just a map of the world. The cartographer also created dissected maps of Asia, America, Europe, Africa, England and Wales, Ireland, and Scotland. The new invention quickly spread across Europe, and craftsmen in various cities began manufacturing similar puzzles. They started depicting not only geographical maps but also biblical motifs, landscapes, and various other images. However, it must be noted that the puzzle was a unique handmade product and was made of wood. At the time, modern technologies that would allow the wooden map to be cut mechanically did not yet exist. Thus, puzzles were made strictly to order or in very limited quantities. Due to the high cost, not every London resident could afford a puzzle. For this reason, puzzles remained a luxury item and a tool for literacy until approximately the beginning of the 19th century. In the 1800s, they were first produced on cardboard. Although they were not very popular for a long time, as they were considered lower quality, this decision later allowed for continuous, large-scale industrial sales.

The Diversity of Modern Puzzles

Throughout the 20th century, puzzles remained extremely popular. The puzzles began featuring social satirical drawings, still life images, and cartoon characters. Production volumes increased worldwide. Some cities even started hosting original competitions to see who could assemble puzzles the fastest. Manufacturers invented unique packaging designs, and great attention was also paid to the level of difficulty. Over time, the overall picture size grew larger, while the individual pieces, conversely, became smaller.

In modern London, you can find countless diverse puzzles for both children and adults. Various companies present puzzles to suit any taste. They differ in size, shape, complexity, and image. Modern technology allows for the manufacture of puzzles that glow in the dark or have a 3D effect. There is even the option to order a puzzle depicting any personal photograph.

One of the reasons London is known worldwide is for its amazing scientific discoveries.
