Many scientists from London are known throughout the world. They invented new methods and technologies as well as researched various phenomena. Their descendants continue the work with modern tools. One of the most interesting for modern scientists is the professional activity of the world-famous British chemist Frederick Augustus Abel. He could boast of considerable authority in the field of explosives research. Apparently, he was born just “in time” because that period was characterised by frantic progress in many areas of life and humanity’s thirst for discovering something new. However, it was difficult to say why the boy became interested in chemistry and science. Taking into account his background, nobody would be surprised if Frederick Abel became a famous composer or musician. After all, his father was a pianist and devoted almost his entire life to music and teaching. Despite this, his son was more interested in science. Therefore, in 1845, he became one of the first 26 students of A. W. von Hofmann at the Royal College of Chemistry. That was how his eventful scientific path began. Soon, in 1852, he was appointed as a chemistry lecturer at the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich. It became the first impetus for more professional scientific activity, conducting research and discovering new inventions.

Further professional activity

For a long period of time, Frederick Abel was engaged in the research of explosives, which could be explained by his first place of work. From 1854 to 1888, Frederick Abel worked at the Chemical Establishment of the Royal Arsenal, studying ammunition. The scientist devoted a lot of attention to research of gunpowder ignition. During that period, he also collaborated with famous physicists to achieve the desired result. A little later, the chemist developed the Abel test, which made it possible to determine the flash point of petroleum products. In general, during his tenure in this position, he made a great contribution to the development of the field of explosives. Thanks to his activities, Frederick Abel gained great authority and recognition. For example, in 1860, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. During 1875-1877, the scientist was the president of the Chemical Society. In addition, he became president of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, the Institute of Chemistry and the Society of Chemical Industry. He also got many awards and titles. In 1877, Frederick Abel was appointed Commander of the Order of the Bath (a well-known British order of chivalry) and was knighted in April 1883.

One of the most famous inventions of the scientist was a gunpowder substitute in firearms. Under the guidance of a scientist, the first guncotton was developed at the Waltham Abbey Royal Gunpowder Mills in 1865. Later, in 1889, he patented cordite. Thus, the chemist managed to discover one of the types of nitro-glycerine smokeless powder. Today, it is quite successfully used in military affairs. Frederick Abel also worked for some time in the field of electronics. In particular, he paid attention to electrical fuses and the use of electricity for military purposes in general. The scientist passed away in London in September 1902.

Thanks to the inventions of many British scientists, the country is always considered one of the centres of scientific research.
